Kip Bedell began making wine in 1985 in the old David's potato barn (built in 1919).
A small portion of the barn was used as the Winery and Tasting Room, with the remaining portion used for storage and tractor maintenance.
A new case storage wing was added in 1996 to the existing winery.
With the recent expansion and renovation of the barn in 2001, the Bedell winery now features a truly international array of state-of-the-art equipment:
- A GAI bottling line and Kosme labeler (Italian), with the ability to bottle and label 65 bottles per minute.
- A Pellenc Harvester (French), the first of its kind in the Northeastern USA, which picks the fruit gently yet exceedingly clean.
- Scharffenberger lift Gondolas (German), with hydraulic lifts, to facilitate transferring the freshly picked grapes gently from the Gondola into the tanks without pumping.
- New Reiger stainless steel fermenting tanks (German), with drain screens designed to gently separate the grape juice from the skins and seeds. The total capacity of our 39 stainless steel fermenting tanks is 48,000 gallons.
- 325 French and American oak barriques (60 gallon barrels), with a total capacity of 19,500 gallons.
All of the above equipment helps us to extract the ripe supple skin tannins of our grapes, but not the harsher seed and stem tannins, by minimizing handling of the fruit.
