Michael Lynne, the former CEO of New Line Cinema, is a longtime art collector and supporter; as an entertainment lawyer in the 1970s and ’80s, he represented artists like Julian Schnabel and Jean Michel Basquiat in exchange for some of the works they were creating. Today, he is both the owner of the North Fork, Long Island, winery Bedell Cellars and a Museum of Modern Art trustee — which is how, at a MoMA party in May, he found himself seated next to his friend, the artist Mickalene Thomas, whose work he also collects.

Long Island's Rising Tide
0n the East End of Long Island, winemakers pray to the sea. About 75 miles east of Manhattan, the island's twin forks open like a crab claw. Between them is Peconic Bay, with the North Fork jutting into Long Island Sound and the South Fork in thrall to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Cool New World
The terms “Old World” and “New World” have been part of the wine lexicon for decades. Old World wines, defined as the product of terroir and tradition, are grown in less than perfect conditions and yield wines of elegance and balance. New World wines, commonly grown in warmer climates, are dark with inky extraction, high alcohol and overtly ripe fruit.

Label of Love
A line of wines you can judge by the cover.
Wine labels are like book covers: Few admit to considering the design—but everyone does. (The 22 members of the Facebook group “I choose wine based solely on a quirky name or label” might be an exception.)
But Bedell vineyard and winery on the East End of Long Island has a line you should be proud to buy for the design. Sure, the bottles’ contents are widely regarded as some of the best in the state—but the art on the labels literally belongs in the MoMA. That’s because they were designed by such famous contemporary artists as Chuck Close, Barbara Kruger, Ross Bleckner, April Gornik, Eric Fischl and Howard Schatz.
