Protecting our environment.
OUR 80-ACRE ESTATE IS CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE. WE VIEW OUR VINEYARDS AS PART OF A LARGER SURROUNDING ECOSYSTEM THAT SAFEGUARDS THE HEALTH OF PEOPLE, WILDLIFE, WOODLANDS AND FRAGILE MARINE ESTUARIES.
Our grapes are certified sustainable by Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing, the first organization of it’s kind on the East Coast.
We adhere to a checklist of 200 sustainable farming best practices that have been fine tuned for Long Island’s climate over the past 30 years. Doing so has greatly reduced our use of agricultural inputs, thereby protecting our land and water resources for the future.
We compost all our grape seeds and skins and vine cane prunings each year, spreading them back in the vineyard as natural fertilizer. Such responsible re-use of on-farm nitrogen sources protects Long Island’s fragile groundwater supply.
Bedell Cellars’ Director of Winemaking, Rich Olsen-Harbich helped write the sustainable grape growing guidelines for Long Island, and continues his leadership in the field with plans for a statewide certification program.
